Chronic inflammatory diseases remain as one of the world's major health problems. Inflammation is the response of living tissues to injury. Its main aim to remove the early cause of cell injury, clearance of necrotic cells and tissue damaged from initial insult and the inflammatory process, and to trigger tissue repair. This study aims to determine further the level of efficacy in the anti-inflammatory activity of Santan by formulating an ointment containing 75% and 100% of the extract, the level of safety of the formulated ointment based on the result patch and scratch test and the significant difference in the efficacy between the dosage formulation of Santan ointments and Betamethasone ointment (positive control). This study also aims to determine whether the Santan extract is effective in a different dosage formulation that is more convenient to use rather than suspension as conducted from the previous study.
Researcher have conducted the experimental method of research purposely to find out the effectiveness of the anti-inflammatory effect of Santan leaves extract through subjected to phytochemical test and test for the absence of alcohol, laboratory test animals and experimental procedures to come up with topical dosage form, of the formulated Santan ointments (75% & 100%). Toxicity skin test was carried out by performing patch and scratch test using the acclimatized guinea pigs for evaluation of its safety. The formulated ointment (75% & 100%) was tested to male albino rats using formalin as inflammatory inducer conducting the following tests: Plethysmometer (Reduction of swelling) and Plantar (pain tolerance).\
Results and Discussion. Data and results that were gathered during experiments were statistically compared between the different concentration (75% & 75%) of the formulated Santan ointments. The 75% has a significant difference compared to 100% Santan ointment. The 75% has a significant difference compared to positive control. Moreover the 100% Santan ointment has no significant difference to positive control. It can be concluded that the 100% preparation of the Santan ointment. Hence, the 100% Santan ointment elicits the highest anti-inflammatory property.
Conclusions. The 100% Santan ointment exhibited the most satisfying result of all. The results reveal that the Santan ointment has a significant effect in relation to decrease in pain scales, reduction of swelling, absence of skin toxicity and comparable with the positive control. Through the formulation of this ointment, potential adverse effect can be avoided.
